AKEL is determined to do everything possible to clarify the cases in the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Famagusta after the municipal elections last December, talking about altering the election result in the Municipality of Ayia Napa and recount in the Municipality of Famagusta.
Regarding Ayia Napa, the complaint of the alteration of the electoral lists is being seriously examined with the presence of a large number of community voters in the electoral list of the Municipality. A case that came to light during the pre-election period when the independent candidate Vassos Vassilios announced the registration of 100 Community voters, of which 25 voters from European Union countries had registered on the same street in Ayia Napa, Kryou Nero 46 and another 33 people with names indicating origin from Community countries declared as their residence address the Avenue Nisi no. 100.
The Larnaca-Famagusta District Secretary of AKEL, Dimitris Chrysanthou, referring to the issue, stated that a decision has already been made to appeal before the Electoral Court, after the issues have been studied by lawyers, with the complaint expected to be filed within the next week.

Regarding the case of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, he noted that this is not a recount of votes but a registration of a complaint before the Electoral Court, as he said, with the closure of the lists at the beginning of last October, AKEL filed a series of objections for specific individuals who were listed in Ayia Napa, which were not extended. Nevertheless, as Mr. Chrysanthou mentioned, the official answer that AKEL received from the Deputy Prefect is that the objections were not examined and that instructions were received from the Ministry of Interior to register all the community members in the electoral lists.
Vassos Vassilios: "Clear the electoral list of Ayia Napa"
Particularly critical was the candidate of Giannis Karousos, Vassos Vassilios in his statements, noting that in Ayia Napa do not live 3200 registered voters but 1500-1700. He stressed the fact that "the electoral list of Ayia Napa must be cleared by foreigners who with paid tickets and illegal relocations distort the election result." He added that it is impossible for 100 community voters to have 2 registered addresses.
It is noted that 3.220 voters were registered in the electoral list of the Municipality of Ayia Napa during the municipal elections last December, of which 2.626 Cypriots and 594 community members, a number that corresponds to almost 25% of the total number. It should be noted, at the same time, that during the last population census in 2011 in Ayia Napa, a total of 3.212 inhabitants were registered.
Asked by Mr. Vassilios if he felt wronged by the result, he replied that the most important thing is to regulate the issue of the registration of community voters in the electoral roll. It is noted that during the municipal elections of 2016, Mr. Karousos was re-elected Mayor of Famagusta with a percentage of 64,89% (1682 votes) while Vassos Vassiliou received 910 votes (35,11%).
Recount in the Municipality of Famagusta
In the case of the Municipality of Famagusta, as well as Limassol, the case will focus on invalid ballots, their large number and the variety of decisions per polling station. The difference between Alexis Galanos, who was elected, and Simos Ioannou is 23 votes.
The legal burden of the two cases will be borne by the MP lawyer Aristos Damianou and the former MP lawyer Aristophanis Georgiou, accompanied by a group of other lawyers.
