The Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos, calls on the municipalities of the province of Famagusta “to respect the occupied Municipality of Famagusta and not to make a continuous effort to appropriate and degrade the Municipality of Famagusta, which indirectly serves the Turkish which were organized before 1974 by the currently occupied metropolitan Municipality of Famagusta ".
An announcement from the Municipality of Famagusta states that letters have been sent to the Mayors of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis, Sotiras, George Takka, Ayia Napa, Giannis Karousos and Deryneia, Andro Karagianni, to whom the Municipality of Famagusta expresses its order but also for broader political and national reasons ”.
He adds that such celebrations are the flower beds of Famagusta, the feast of the orange, the feast of the flood.
In his letter, the Mayor of Famagusta suggests that, if the municipalities of the province of Famagusta wish "to continue the tradition by holding such events, the minimum we will suggest, for the sake of the whole province and the case of the Cyprus problem against the Turkish aspirations, would be there is a pre-arranged co-organization with the metropolitan municipality of Famagusta ".
The decision to send the letters was taken unanimously by the Municipal Council of Famagusta at its meeting on May 11, 2017.

Through today's article in the newspaper "Alithia", the Mayor of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis thanked Mr. Galanos for his remarks, noting that "we will respond by opening our arms to the Municipality of Famagusta". Mr. Pyrillis said that “we do not embrace what is attributed to us. However, it is our pleasure that the Municipality of Famagusta is our co-organizer in all events ".
Karagiannis: "Our relations are excellent"
Through the same article in the newspaper "Alithia" answered the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, who wondered why this letter is addressed to his municipality since the Municipality of Deryneia has excellent relations with all municipalities in the province and especially Municipality of Famagusta, since the cultural center of occupied Famagusta is in Deryneia. "If there is one that promotes the cultural center of the metropolitan municipality, it is the Municipality of Deryneia", he added.
In fact, he pointed out, when the Municipality of Famagusta was organizing the orange festival at the political center in Deryneia, the citizens of Deryneia were the first to take part together with the Famagusta people. "The Municipality of Deryneia, which has lost 75% of its land and sea, does not organize flowerbeds, floods, carnivals or orange festivals, only the strawberry and jiverti festival," he said. On the contrary, he continued, the Municipality of Deryneia, whenever it holds events, mentions Famagusta and Deryneia recognizes that the capital of the province of Famagusta is Famagusta. Finally, Mr. Karagiannis said that "no visitor, foreign or local, passes through Deryneia and is not informed about the occupied city of Famagusta. That is why I believe that this letter does not concern our municipality ".
The Municipalities of Sotira and Ayia Napa did not make any statements on the matter.
