Funds are expected from the European Union to complete the construction works on the roadblocks of Deryneia and Lefkas, according to Sotos Zakhaios.

As revealed by the visits to the roadblocks of Deryneia and Lefka made last week by representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties, under the auspices of the Embassy of Slovakia, the works are on the right track but the part of the road that is in the dead zone in both yet to be repaired.

Asked about this by KYPE, the head of the Greek Cypriot side in the Technical Committee for Roadblocks, Sotos Zakhaios, explained that EU funding is expected and a request has already been made.

"We expect the funds to be found so that they can proceed as in the previous procedures with a consortium of e / k and t / k construction company to complete the projects in the dead zone in both Deryneia and Lefka," he said.

In addition, UNFICYP Spokesperson Alim Sindik told KYPE that the Force is ready to facilitate the construction of roads within the dead zone at both roadblocks.

He noted that it is the responsibility of both sides to find the relevant funding and agree on the bidding process so that the projects at the two roadblocks can be completed.

At the Deryneia roadblock, the road has been asphalted in the occupied areas but there is no electricity, nor have telephone lines been installed in the area where the inspection will take place.

In the free areas, sidewalks have been constructed and the asphalt paving of Famagusta Avenue and the installation of prefabricated buildings remain.

At the Lefkas roadblock, in the free areas, the works for widening a 2.6 km long road have started, while the Turkish Cypriot side is working on a road with a distance of 1.5 km.

However, no work has been done in the dead zone at both roadblocks.
