The need for the 27 members of the European Union to remain united in the face of the forthcoming Brexit negotiations was pointed out by the German Minister of Finance Wolfgang Schieble.

Seibel also told foreign journalists in Berlin that he believed the negotiations would be difficult and complicated. He added that once the negotiations are completed, it should be clear to everyone that staying in the EU has more benefits than leaving it.

"Now it's important that we in the European Union of 27 remain united," Seibel said, adding that it was important to send a message to other EU countries that they should not be tempted to follow Britain's example, with the rationale that they can enjoy the benefits of staying in the EU without fulfilling their obligations.

Schieble, who also said Germany was open to new forms of cooperation with Britain, had said in the past that he wanted a "reasonable" Brexit deal for the City of London.
