Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest increased by 29,5% in 12 months. These are the highest rates since 2008, according to the country's competent body, Inpe.

The rainforest lost 9.762 square kilometers (3,769 square miles) of its vegetation between August 2018 and July 2019. The country's far-right president, Bolsonaro, has previously questioned the accuracy of the data provided by Inpe. However, scientists point out that since coming to power, the deforestation of the Amazon has accelerated, as the new president puts growth above the preservation of natural wealth.

As the last large rainforest on the planet, the Amazon is vital for storing carbon dioxide and fighting climate change. Over the past decade, previous Brazilian governments have emphasized protection and reduced deforestation rates with stricter controls and stricter fines.

Bolsonaro has seen a dramatic drop in timber seizures, while convictions for environmental crimes and fines are rare.
