A 73-year-old woman from the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India has given birth to twin girls after undergoing in vitro fertilization.
The babies were born by caesarean section on Thursday and are in good health, as is the elderly mother, Mangayama Yaramati. However, her 82-year-old husband, Sitarama Rajarao, after the joy he received, suffered a stroke and is being treated.
"We are incredibly happy," the husband told BBC Telegu a few hours after the children were born. When asked who would take care of the babies if something happened to them, due to their advanced age, he replied: “Nothing is in our hands. Whatever will be, will be. "Everything is in the hands of God."
Yaramati explained that she and her husband always wanted to have children but had not succeeded all these years. It was very important for them, as they felt stigmatized in their village. "We tried many times and saw countless doctors (…) so this is the happiest moment of my life," said the 73-year-old.
In 2016, another Indian woman over the age of 70, Daltzinder Kaur, gave birth to a baby boy.
