One dead and six wounded in Corsica shootings

The perpetrator is 60 years old, a Corsican living in the neighborhood

A 60-year-old man opened fire in the middle of a street in Bastia, Corsica, this afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring six others, including a police officer, before drowning at his home, police said.

Terrorist tracks or the possibility of robbery were previously ruled out by investigators, sources said, noting that police were called in to respond to a neighbor's quarrel when shots were fired as they intervened.

The perpetrator is a Corsican living in the neighborhood, born in 1953, and has been convicted in the past of violent incidents, sources close to the investigation said.

Police and gendarmerie units were deployed at the scene and tried to control it.

A spokesman for the prefecture said it was "an individual gunman".
