A quadruple fatality marked the arrival of the new year in Limassol. The terrible traffic accident in which the grandfather, grandmother and two grandchildren lost their lives, one of whom is a minor, occurred half an hour after midnight on the Limassol Platron road.

Deceased are Vathoula Georgiou, 27 years old from Limassol, her brother Nikolas Georgiou, 17 years old, the grandfather of Nikolas Zavrou from Limnati, 73 years old, and her grandmother Evanthia Georgiou, 74 years old.

As the head of the Limassol traffic police, Marios Charalambous, said in his statements at the scene, the traffic accident occurred when a double-cab vehicle, driven by a 47-year-old man with his 38-year-old wife as a passenger, heading north on Yannis Kranidiotis Street, under circumstances that are being investigated, collided with a private vehicle driven by 27-year-old Georgiou, was heading south on the same street and was attempting a right turn onto Agia Anastasia street. "This particular junction is controlled by traffic lights and the exact circumstances under which the collision occurred are being investigated. There is some testimony that is being evaluated," said Mr. Charalambous.

From the fierce collision, the 27-year-old driver, her co-driver grandfather and the passengers, her grandmother and her minor brother, who were riding in the small car, died instantly. "There were four people in a private vehicle who were freed by the Fire Service. They were taken to the Limassol General Hospital where they were unfortunately pronounced dead. A couple of foreigners were riding in the double-cab vehicle, who were injured and are being treated at the Limassol Hospital. The driver of the diplocabin underwent an alcohol test with a zero reading," said Mr. Charalambous in his statements.

According to the Limassol traffic officer, at first glance the victims were not wearing seat belts. As he said, "there was a severe collision, there may have been an increased speed, this is also subject to investigation. All possibilities are being investigated, there is testimony being evaluated."

Information states that grandparents were having fun with their children and grandchildren at a house in Limassol and after the arrival of the new year, their grandchildren took them home.
