Denmark has ordered the killing of 25.000 chickens after detecting H5N8 bird flu on a farm, officials said today, halting poultry and egg exports to countries outside the European Union for at least three months.

According to the APE - MPE, the mass killing of poultry takes place after cases of bird flu were detected in wild birds in the western part of the country in recent days, while cases have been recorded in other European countries in recent weeks.

Earlier in the day, Germany ordered the slaughter of 16.100 turkeys after the same type of bird flu was detected on a farm in northern Germany.

The Danish Directorate of Veterinary and Food said in a statement that no cases of human infection had been reported in Europe and that the EU authorities had been informed of the current findings.
