Japan: Princess Mako marries 'common mortal' - Loses royal status

Princess Mako rejects the 150 million yen wedding gift that the government usually gives to princesses who marry a common mortal

Princess Mako, niece of the Emperor of Japan, married the "common mortal" Kay Komuro, thus losing her royal status. Under Japanese law, female members of the imperial family lose their status after marriage to a "common mortal," which is not the case for male members.

Princess Mako also rejected the 150 million yen ($ 1,36 million) wedding gift that the government usually gives to princesses who marry a common mortal, as their marriage loses their title and all the privileges that come from him. She is the first female member of the royal family to deny both

Wearing a light blue dress and holding a bouquet, Mako said goodbye to her parents and her 26-year-old sister Kako, in front of the family home. They all wore masks, as provided for in Japan.

The 30-year-old formally bowed to her parents, but her sister hugged her.
