Twelve injured after explosion at petrochemical plant near airport Cairo.

At least 12 people were injured when an explosion at a petrochemical plant near Cairo airport. 

Civil Aviation Minister Younis al-Masri assured that take-offs and landings at the airport were continuing normally despite the blast, which was heard throughout eastern Cairo.

Armed Forces spokesman Tamir al-Rifai said in a twitter post:

"Due to the high temperatures, there was an explosion in the tank of a company of the petrochemical industry. "Civil Protection vehicles rushed to the area to bring the fire under control."

Eyewitnesses said they saw ambulances and fire engines rushing to the scene as a cloud of thick black smoke rose in the area. Earlier, Egyptian state television reported that the fire had been brought under control.

Police have developed a powerful force in the region, reported correspondent of the French Press Agency that was in place.
