UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while briefing reporters in Lorenzkog, on the sidelines of a gathering of mediators and peace activists, said that migration was "inevitable" and "necessary".
The issue is hot in both Europe and the United States: in recent days hundreds of migrants are in the Mediterranean, three European countries are forming an "axis" against illegal immigration and the Donald Trump administration is on fire because it separates the families of illegal immigrants . Countries have the right to adopt their own immigration policy "provided that the human rights of migrants are respected and that this is done in a way that makes international co-operation more relevant than it has been so far".
Asked about the fate of the 630 Aquarius migrants who were admitted to Spain on Sunday after a week of wandering and the fact that US authorities are separating the children of illegal immigrants from their families, the UN Secretary-General said:
"Immigration is a phenomenon that is inevitable."
The UN secretary-general referred to his 95-year-old mother, who is being cared for by assistants in Portugal, his country of origin.
"I have never seen a Portuguese man deal with my mother. "They are always immigrants and it is clear in my mind that immigration is a necessity."
The UN Secretary-General also said that if migration is a necessity,
"Then it is better to organize them, to regulate them, to act so that they take place within a framework in which countries cooperate and in which everyone benefits, especially all these immigrants who are today in desperate conditions."
It is noted that the international community will meet on 10 and 11 December in Marrakesh for a conference on migration issues, which should lead to the adoption of a global pact on "safe migration".
