Eight people were killed and dozens more injured when a series of bomb blasts rocked a stadium in the city of Jalalabad late Friday night, officials said.

The blasts took place at a football stadium in the city, where a cricket match was taking place, and the holy month of Ramadan had just begun, said Sohrab Kaderi, a member of the provincial council. According to him, the explosions were due to two rockets fired against the stadium.

Ataullah Hogyani, a spokesman for the Nangarhar governor, said eight spectators had been killed and 43 others injured when at least three blasts struck, one after another.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Violence in Nangarhar province, on the border with Pakistan, has escalated this year. Last week, a coordinated attack on a public service killed at least 15 people.

Both Islamic State (IS) jihadists and the Taliban are active in the province. Last week, the governor of Nangarhar was relieved of his duties due to the deteriorating security situation in the province.
