More than 200 people have been arrested in Saudi Arabia as part of an unprecedented anti-corruption crackdown in the kingdom, with authorities targeting princes and ministers, according to a press release issued by the country's attorney general.

As it turns out, the embezzled money amounts to $ 100 billion (€ 86,1 billion) over decades.

"Based on our research over the past three years, we estimate that at least $ 100 billion has been embezzled through systematic corruption and abuse for several decades," said Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb.

According to him, 208 people were arrested and interrogated, seven of them were released without charges being brought against them.

The attorney general reiterated the statements made by other high-ranking officials that commercial activities have not been affected by the wave of prosecutions and that only personal bank accounts have been "frozen", not corporate ones.

"Companies and banks are free to continue their transactions, as usual."
