The resignation of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is a historic opportunity for the people of this country, said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nowert.
"Certainly what we saw, the resignation of Robert Mugabe, is a historic opportunity and a historic moment for the people of Zimbabwe," Nauert told a news conference.
He added that citizens strongly expressed their desire to end the country's isolation and allow Zimbabwe to rejoin the international community.
"The future of Zimbabwe must be decided by its citizens," he said, calling for "free and fair" elections.
