A new arrest of a German national was made by the Turkish authorities, according to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to foreign reports, 33-year-old Amril Demirsi is in custody on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization.

Demirsi holds both a German and a Turkish passport and works as a social worker and journalist for the Turkish-speaking left-wing news agency ETIA. It originates from Cologne, Germany.

On April 7, he traveled with his very ill mother from Cologne to Istanbul, as his mother wished to see for the last time the city where he was born.

Last Friday morning, Turkish police men - wearing face masks - broke down the door of Demirsi's house and arrested him.

Today, his lawyer announced that Demirsi is accused by the Turkish authorities of being a member of a terrorist organization. Specifically of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Turkey (MLKP) and that in 2013 and 2015 he had taken part in the funerals of members of the party, which in Turkey is considered a terrorist organization.

On Tuesday, the 33-year-old is expected to apologize before a prosecutor in Istanbul.
