At least 25 civilians, including seven children, have been killed in airstrikes targeting the last stronghold of Islamic State (IS) in eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a rally in the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, killing at least XNUMX people, according to the Observatory.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman attributed the raids to the Washington-backed international coalition against the Islamic State.

The United States supports a Kurdish and Arab militant group operating in Syria's Deir Ezzor province.

The coalition has not yet commented on the news.

After its great rise in 2014 and the conquest of vast areas of territory in Syria and Iraq, the ISIS was defeated by Baghdad forces and is now confined to some of the last pockets it still controls in Syria, which are under heavy attack.

The village of Al Saafah is located on the east bank of the Euphrates, north of the former jihadist stronghold in Bukamal, near the border with Iraq.

The Observatory announced on Thursday the deaths of at least 82 people in February, most of them relatives of IS fighters, from airstrikes against jihadists in the IS enclave in eastern Syria.

On the east bank of the Euphrates, operations are being carried out by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition of Kurds and Arab fighters backed by Washington.

Syrian government forces, backed by the Russian air force, are encamped on the west bank of the Euphrates.

The IK now controls less than 3% of Syrian territory, according to the Observatory.

On its website, the coalition states that at least 841 civilians have been killed, unintentionally, by airstrikes launched since the beginning of 2014 during its operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

More than 2011 people have been killed and millions displaced since the war in Syria began in 340.000 following the crackdown on peaceful protests in the country against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
