It was in the early 60s that the Cold War took its wildest form, with President Kennedy urging Americans to build nuclear shelters everywhere, even under their own homes.
The nuclear shelters were forgotten but now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the nightmarish scenario of a third world war are coming to the fore again.
And maybe the image we have of a shelter is a deep frozen basement lined with cement and the lights flickering. There are some millionaires who have paid for and built nuclear shelters in luxury.
Nuclear shelters are generally built deep in the ground, or in the mountains. They have extremely thick reinforced concrete walls, have thick steel doors and have the necessities for survival after a nuclear strike.
The Oppidum
Oppidum is an ultra-luxury nuclear shelter in the heart of Europe, in the Czech Republic. Surrounded by high mountains and is the epitome of luxury.
It has 6 large apartments, toilets, whirlpool tubs, double sinks, spa, sauna, swimming pool, basement garden with sunlight simulator, cinema, library, billiard room, communication room, a small hospital and dental clinics for all water, and air. This is located in Kansas, USA and was built during the Cold War. It has 15 (underground) floors and can protect even in the event of a direct nuclear strike with a bomb 100 times more powerful than that of Nagasaki.
It has space for your dogs to walk, it has a shooting and archery area, a climbing wall, a water park, a bar, a gym while the stored food and power units can last up to 5 years.
Organic hydroponic plants are also grown under artificial light to keep users physically and psychologically healthy. LED lights are used in all units to match the effect of daylight.
Trident
A shelter built under Lake Trident in the US looks more like an underground resort.
It has 600 rooms, a golf course, a sports center, a polo field, 12 helipads with a lift (ie they rise to the surface).
xPoint
It is probably the largest luxury shelter in the world with an area equal to the size of Manhattan. Located in South Dakota, it has 575 apartments. Each apartment can accommodate from 10 to 24 people (if they sleep on the floor).
Each apartment has a kitchen, dining area, living room and gym. The space that connects these apartments has a swimming pool, roads, and places for recreation and sports.
