NATO is helping Europeans "more" than the Americans, US President Donald Trump said today in a joint press conference he gave to the White House with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"NATO is great but it helps Europe more than we do," he said on the same day as the Alliance's foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.
The American president mainly asks the allied countries to increase their financial contribution.
"Other countries should pay more. I'm not just talking about Germany. Other countries would have to pay more. "We are protecting Europe and yet we are paying more than anyone else."
Trump wants member states to honor the commitment they made in September 2014 and spend 2% of their GDP on defense.
Earlier, new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo conveyed the same message to his NATO counterparts.
