A car crash involving a bus in the Amazon region of Ecuador has killed 18 people and injured 25 others, the emergency response agency ECU911 announced on Sunday.

In addition to the 18 dead "according to information from the staff of the Ministry of Health, 25 people have been injured", according to a press release issued by the service. The accident took place on Saturday night on a highway in the community of Wabi, in the municipality of Sucua, in the province of Morona Santiago, in the southeastern part of the country, not far from the border with Peru.

The police, according to the announcement, made it known that the accident happened when the bus "went off the road" and was followed by a "collision and overturning". ECU911 clarified that the injured were taken to hospitals in Makas, the provincial capital, and Sukua.

The bodies of the victims were transported to the morgues of the same hospitals. Road accidents are among the leading causes of death in Ecuador.
