Jim Mattis: Talks with North Korea if it suspends its nuclear program

There could be an opportunity for talks between North Korea and the United States if Pyongyang halted testing and developing nuclear and ballistic missiles, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said today. "If they stopped the tests, they stopped the development, they did not export their weapons, there would be an opportunity for talks," Matisse told reporters on a flight to the Colorado Springs.

Although Washington maintains that in the problem with North Korea all options, even the military, are on the table, the minister has repeatedly stressed that he prefers to find a solution through diplomacy.

Last week, from Seoul, on an official visit, US President Donald Trump warned North Korea that it was ready to use US military force to stop any attack by Pyongyang. At the same time, however, he urged North Korea to "conclude an agreement."
