Belgium: Two drug dealers call police to rescue them

Belgium Drug Dealers, ARREST

In the face of their absolute certainty that they would explode, locked in a container, with the temperature even exceeding 40 degrees, the prison would probably seem like an oasis. Two men suspected of cocaine trafficking in the port of Antwerp called the police to free them from the trap where they had been found.

The two men, aged 24 and 25, were remanded in custody today after being prosecuted, the Antwerp prosecutor's office announced. The events unfolded on Wednesday at one of the docks of the huge commercial port, which is considered one of the main imports of cocaine into Europe from Latin America.

Around noon, local police received a call from the two men who said they had been "trapped" in a metal container in which they were hiding drugs.

It took police almost two hours to locate the container at the port. Opening it, with their arms outstretched, they saw two topless men who surrendered immediately, without any resistance. Some port workers made sure to wet the detainees with water to relieve the heat.

Authorities did not specify the amount of drugs found in the container, citing only "a shipment of cocaine". According to the local newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen, it was "hundreds of kilos of cocaine". In 2018, more than 50 tons of cocaine were found and confiscated in the port of Antwerp. Since 2014, the quantity seized on an annual basis has increased sixfold, according to official figures.
