The UK Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee has confirmed that the current recommendation in the UK is to give citizens under the age of 40 a coronavirus vaccine other than AstraZeneca.

The decision was made due to concerns about cases of thrombosis in young people.

By April 28, a total of 242 cases of thrombosis had been reported in the first 28,5 million doses of the drug and six cases under investigation after 6 million second doses. Of these, 49 cases resulted in death.

The Drug Regulatory Authority has assured that the benefits of administering all vaccines continue to outweigh the risks to the vast majority of citizens.

However, the new recommendation applies immediately and is an extension of the previous recommendation to avoid administering the AstraZeneca product to those under 30 years of age.

Vaccination in those under 40 is expected to begin within days.
