There are reports that it spreads faster but the disease is milder, Dr. Haris Armeftis, pulmonologist and vice-president of the Cyprus Pulmonary Society, told Politis 107.6 and 97.6 regarding the Omicron variant.

"The records show that it mainly affects the upper respiratory tract, ie it does not cause pneumonia, however the problem, according to the records, is that the category of citizens who are unvaccinated and have not been ill in the past is more at risk," the doctor stressed. These people, noted Dr. Armeftis, are completely unprotected and in danger of being taken to the hospital.

Regarding the hospitalizations, the doctor pointed out that "our index and the parameter if something will change in the measures and if they have to be tightened, is the hospitalization index and we have to see that". Patients who have been declassified from the disease are transferred from the General Hospital of Nicosia to other private hospitals and this, the doctor pointed out, is the biggest problem.
