The case against 2 doctors for the cataract surgeries will be brought before a court soon, says the Police

Two doctors have complained in writing about the case of infection of eight patients after cataract surgery in a private hospital in Nicosia in 2020 and the case is expected to be registered in court soon, said on Friday the KYPE Police Spokesman, Christos Andre.

Asked by KYPE to comment on front-page news of the newspaper Phileleftheros on the issue, Mr. Andreou stated that the case was sent to the Police by the Legal Service and the two doctors were charged in writing yesterday. A case is expected to be filed in court by Monday or within the next week, he added.

The two doctors face eight charges each, related to a misdemeanor involving reckless and negligent acts. The relevant article of the Penal Code under which they are charged states that "whoever, in such a reckless manner, hasty or negligent, as to endanger human life or be likely to cause bodily harm to another, perform medical or surgical treatment on a person of whom he undertook the treatment, is guilty of a misdemeanor ".

The Legal Service announced yesterday that instructions were given to the Police to file criminal cases against two persons regarding the cases of infecting patients in ophthalmic surgeries.

It is recalled that the case concerns the complications presented by eight patients who had undergone cataract surgery due to an attack by a multi-resistant strain of pseudomonas. The complications occurred in October 2020 and the patients were treated in a second private clinic in Limassol, and after presenting serious complications they were rushed to the Hospital of Archbishop Makarios III of OKYPY. Of the eight who underwent surgery, four lost their sight in the eye that underwent surgery, while the other four had reduced vision.
