Amid fierce reactions, the sentences in the trial for the deadly fire in Mati were announced.

The Three-member Criminal Court of Athens imposed a prison sentence of 3 to 111 years on the five convicted for the fires in Eastern Attica that led to the death of 104 citizens.

However, it is only extensible for 5 years, which again caused reactions.

Specifically to:

• Sotiris Terzoudis Chief of Operations of the Fire Brigade sentenced to 111 years in prison with a suspended sentence of 5 years

• Vassilis Matthaiopoulos Deputy Chief of Operations of the Fire Brigade 15 years in prison with a suspended sentence of 5 years

• Io. Fostieris, Commander of the Unified Operations Coordination Center sentenced to 111 years in prison with a suspended sentence of 5 years

• Nik. Panayiotopoulos, Commander of the Athens Fire Service, sentenced to 111 years in prison with a suspended sentence of 5 years

• Charalambos Hioni Fire Service Commander of Eastern Attica sentenced to 111 years in prison with a suspended sentence of 5 years

• Con. Angelopoulos, a resident who allegedly started the fire, was sentenced to 3 years in prison.

Monetary penalties

The court commuted the fines to €10 a day with the convicted defendants ordered to pay around €40.000.

And this decision caused a new cycle of reactions from the audience. "Let's do no fundraising... Shame..." cried the relatives of the victims.

"Look us in the eyes... What will you say to your children" said the people who were in the court, while some moved towards the seat and the defendants, even throwing chairs.

The accused fled

"If a public figure was burned it would be a felony. But we are for a misdemeanor. We only have graves" shouted a girl leaving. "Today you burned us again..." the residents shouted.

The accused fled through a back entrance. "Get out," people shouted. Go out and apologize. Same on you. If it wasn't for us, there would be 500 dead" they shouted.
