The mapping of ICUs and the black December of the pandemic in Cyprus

The situation that prevails in the Intensive Care Units as well as the admissions that have been made so far is recorded in the National Report published on December 30 by the Ministry of Health.

Admissions to Hospitals and Intensive Care Units (ICU)

By December 28, a total of 4,9% (n = 966) of cases COVID-19 received hospital treatment. The median age of the treated patients is 64 years (Intra-quadrant range: 49-78 years). Hospital care was mainly for men (n = 560, 58%). The median age of those still hospitalized (n = 149) is 68 years (Intra-quadrant range: 57-80 years) and 63,1% (n = 94) are men. 36,9% (n = 55) concern patients from the province of Nicosia, while 95 people (66%) reported underlying diseases

In total, 93 patients (9,6% of the total number of patients) were admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU4).

The median age of those admitted to the ICU is 69 years (Intra-quadratic range: 63-76 years). The patients in the ICU were mainly men (n = 67, 72%).

The median duration of stay in the ICU (for all patients admitted to the ICU) is 11 days (End-quarter range: 6-20 days).

According to the registered data, on December 28, 28 patients were in the ICU. The median age of these patients was 72 years (Endothelial range: 67-82 years). 64,3% (n = 18) of the cases concerned men while 23 people (82,1%) who were in the ICU had underlying diseases.

The number of patients currently in the ICU, according to registered data, per 100.000 inhabitants is 3,2. Of the 93 patients admitted to the ICU, 86 (92,4%) were intubated and 25 are still intubated.

Death Report until 29/12/2020

• As of December 29, 2020, 144 deaths have been reported, diagnosed with COVID-19. 66% are men (n = 95 deaths) and the remaining 34% are women (n = 49 deaths).

Of the 144 deaths, 117 (81%) had an underlying cause of the disease COVID-19.

• 65% of the total number of deaths due to the underlying disease COVID-19, concerns men (ν = 76 deaths) and the remaining 35% concerns women (ν = 41 deaths).

• The highest frequency of deaths occurs in the age group 80-84 years (28% of the total number of deaths, n = 41).

• December saw the highest number of deaths of people positive for the disease COVID-19, from the beginning of the pandemic until today, with the percentage reaching 53% of the total number of deaths (n = 76). The number of deaths in December is 117% higher than the number of deaths for the entire month of November (n = 35, 24%).

• During the 49th week of the year the highest number of deaths (n = 21 deaths) of people positive for the disease has been recorded COVID-19, from the beginning of the pandemic until today, with 15% of the total number of deaths.

• 36 deaths concern persons who had permanent residence in the nursing homes, of which 28 ended up in a public hospital.

• 92% of deaths (n = 132) had a Public Hospital as the place of death.

• 62 of the 76 deaths recorded in December are in the provinces of Nicosia and Limassol (37 and 25 deaths respectively).
