The cases of coronavirus will be increased and in the coming days estimates the Professor of Microbiology / Molecular Virology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia Dr. Petros Karagiannis, who invites young people to be vaccinated by shielding themselves and those around them.

In his statements to KYPE, Dr. Karagiannis said that there has been a jump in cases in the last three days, we came out three hundred cases above, which does not inspire optimism in the coming days.

"As far as I understand there are still many people who may not have gone for a test even though they know they have had contact and may have symptoms," he said. He added that young people should be sensitive to the fact that they endanger all the good work done so far to control the pandemic in Cyprus and undermine it with some attitudes and recklessness.

Asked if there will be a reduction in cases, the Professor said that "we have seen reductions in the past only with restrictive measures. At the moment, everything is open, it seems that there are not enough controls on who enters and who leaves in places where there is a crowd of mainly young people, who do not sit but instead move, dance, have fun and shout ".

Therefore, he added, great care is needed in such activities because it is from here that several chains started that are active at the moment.

Asked if restrictive measures will be imposed, Dr. Karagiannis said that "I do not know what the Council of Ministers will decide tomorrow. What is delaying the introduction of restrictive measures is vaccination coverage, which continues to shield the older age groups and the virus is circulating at ages where vaccination coverage is low. So, if we do not manage to convince the younger ones to be vaccinated, then we will not see the number of cases fall ".

Regarding the imposition of restrictive measures, he said that at the moment we must give common sense the opportunity to prevail. "If there is no prudence and reflection and we understand what can happen from now until September and later then things will not improve."

I advise young people, said Dr. Karagiannis, if they will go to places where there is a gathering of many people to go with a negative test and apply self-protection measures.

Asked what is expected to happen in September, he said: "If we do not increase our vaccination coverage, we will still have problems with outbreaks. On the other hand, if the vaccination coverage is increased and we exceed 50% of the coverage in the younger groups, we will be shielded ".
