The member of the Advisory Scientific Committee, Professor of Microbiology / Molecular Virology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia, Dr. Petros Karagiannis, spoke at noon and something about the increased number of deaths from coronavirus in August.
Specifically, when asked why so many deaths were recorded, he replied that "so many deaths due to the fact that the current wave, which we hope will be towards its end, was the most serious so far. We had a peak with 1160 cases with a prolonged presence of cases. So it was next that this number of cases would translate into hospitalizations and a large number of intubations, we had reached 54 people.
Regarding the hospitalizations, he explained that 84% are unvaccinated, while the remaining 16% are vaccinated people, who may not have initially reacted to the vaccine, did not produce enough antibodies or have simply lost the antibodies, because they have passed. 8-9 months from their initial vaccination. That is why we recommended to the Government the third support installment, in order to cover this group of the elderly.
