Tightening of the measures, lighter than the lockdown of Limassol and Paphos on a horizontal basis without imposing lockdown in affected areas, were suggested yesterday by the members of the Scientific Advisory Committee during the meeting at the Presidential Palace with the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis.

This was told to KYPE, the member of the Committee, Professor of Microbiology / Molecular Virology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia Dr. Petros Karagiannis, noting that the measures that will be decided will be horizontal.

Dr. Karagiannis said that during yesterday's meeting an epidemiological review was made that was not very encouraging.

"The announcement of the five deaths has colored the debate. "Our suggestions were more to tighten the measures than to relax," he noted.

Asked if the closing of school units was also on the table, Professor Karagiannis stated that "there was a discussion. Whether it will be adopted or not, I do not know. Both the pros and cons were discussed. "Now I do not know where the plate will tilt."

He added that there was also a discussion about restaurants, where in recent days there has been a particularly crowded people.

"Some even went so far as to post photos on social media. They are not behaviors that are consistent with what we say we should be careful and limit our contacts and not synchronize. The opposite is happening ", he noted.

Asked if the rapid tests will increase, he said that "we do a respectable number of rapid tests every day, now it is around 6 thousand. If necessary they will increase. At the moment, a lot of tests are being done and targeted even in communities, which perhaps with the molecular test would not have done such a thorough control and give us positive results from the province and not only from the cities ".

Asked, he said that "nothing was said about closing churches".

"What we suggested is a tightening of the measures a little lighter than those of the lockdown of Limassol and Paphos. No lockdown issue was discussed in affected areas. "Anything that applies will be horizontal," he added.

The recommendation, he continued, is to be careful when we are away from home regarding self-protection measures, to apply the protocols in our workplaces. "It seems that these do not apply and we still have outbreaks both within the family and within the profession," he concluded.
