Cyprus ranks 7th among EU countries in terms of the percentage of its citizens who rent their homes.
Specifically and according to Eurostat, 68,6% own a house while 31,4% rent.
Overall, in 2020 69,7% of the population in the EU lived in private housing compared to 30,3% living in rented housing.
Romania is first
The highest rates of ownership were observed in Romania, where 96% of the population lived in privately owned housing, followed by Slovakia (92%), Hungary (91%) and Croatia (91%).
In all Member States except Germany, ownership is more common. In the case of Germany, half the population lived in a rented house. Ownership shares were also lower in Austria (55%) and Denmark (59%).
