The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, is expected to present today within the framework of the European Council, which is continuing for the second day in Brussels, his proposal for a more active involvement of the EU in efforts to restart negotiations and promote a solution to the Cyprus problem, under the auspices of and within the framework of the UN.

The presentation by the President of the Republic of his proposal will take place after the intervention of the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde. Also, President Christodoulidis is expected to have a meeting today, on the sidelines of the European Council, with the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

On Thursday evening, the President of the Republic had, on the sidelines of the EU Summit, a conversation with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.

According to a government source, during his conversation with the President of the Republic, Mr. Soltz stated that he recognizes the geopolitical benefits that can arise from the proposal and a possible resolution of the Cyprus issue, and expressed his desire to visit Cyprus.

It is recalled that yesterday President Christodoulidis had the opportunity for a brief exchange of views with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, before the start of the lunch of the 27 with the UN Secretary General, in the presence of the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who also attended the meal.

According to information, Mr. Guterres stated that he has been fully informed by the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Rosemary DiCarlo about the discussion he had with the President of the Republic, in Nicosia, as well as his proposal for more active involvement of the EU in the effort for Cypriot.

Also, Mr. Guterres underlined the need to create the conditions for the resumption of talks after the elections in Turkey.
