The Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers (SPOLMIK) expresses its concern regarding the static adequacy and safety of the old buildings in our country, in the event of a similar and / or increased seismic activity, on the occasion of the strong earthquake that was felt on our island on morning hours.

In a statement, he states that the old age of many buildings in our country, the lack of maintenance culture, but also the fact that a large number of them were designed and built before the implementation of the Cyprus Earthquake Regulation in 1994, significantly increases their risk. in the event of seismic activity.

Given that Cyprus is often affected by earthquakes, catastrophic or not, Civil Engineers sound the alarm and restore the urgent need for the regulation of the Regular Building Inspection and the issuance of a Certificate, as a preventive measure to prevent disasters. .

In addition, SPOLMIK calls on the state to prepare subsidy plans for the control of static adequacy and the seismic upgrade of old buildings, giving priority to public buildings.
