Two witnesses were presented on Tuesday (23/5), by the defense of the 74-year-old defendant in the case of his wife's murder, in Tremithousa, before the Permanent Criminal Court sitting in Paphos.

The court proceedings after the sworn testimony of the accused continued today Tuesday with the testimony of two persons summoned by the defense attorney of the 74-year-old Ritsa Pekri.

The couple's neighbor, Helmut Kesting, appeared before the Paphos Criminal Court. On the day in question, Helmut told the court that David Hunter was a quiet and sensible man. He was very proud of his marriage and at every opportunity he showed pictures of his wife, pointing out how loving she was. He explained that Janice was always with him when they met.

Asked to describe the pair's relationship, he said: “Very very beautiful relationship, my wife sometimes got jealous of the way he trusted her, she said I should treat her like that too. They did everything together. She (and Janice) was also very proud – once they invited us to their house and showed us lots of photos from their past, their travels together. I never heard any shouting, never any fighting. There was absolute harmony in their relationship."

He explained that "Janice's health started to deteriorate in 2020. Every day she became more and more sad, for the last three to four months we had no contact, because she did not want to talk"

Asked if Hunter had complained about his wife's care, he replied that “no, Janice often told us that her greatest wish was not to be taken to the hospital, and David achieved that by his act. “To be able to stay at home, he would take the medicine – let's not forget this was during Covid – and he would often tell us that they had difficulties getting the right medicine. What I want to say is that looking after Janice was a very demanding job and she did it very well.'

The next defense witness testified was the hairdresser of the couple, Anna Isaiah, who said that "before the Saturday when the crime was committed, the victim, as she said, had complained to her that she did not sleep at night because she was in pain while regularly referring to her illness.

He went on to state that “I think he realized he didn't have much time. The last time I saw her she was very sad and crying. She lost a lot of weight. Her condition was getting worse, she was having difficulty moving and walking."

"When we heard about what happened we couldn't believe it. We never thought something like this could happen," he told the court.
