Undersecretary of Tourism: A difficult year for tourism

Deputy Minister of Tourism Deputy Minister of Tourism

This year is a difficult year for tourism and is expected to be the next, but we are looking for solutions and promotions to approach last year's goals, said today in Limassol, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios.

In statements on the sidelines of the 2nd annual awards of the "Cypriot Hospitality" Agency, Mr. Perdios said that he expects that 2020 will be a difficult year because Brexit was postponed until October, without anyone knowing if it will apply ", while as he said, nothing is a given for the coming years.

"It is true that this year is a difficult year, next year will also be a difficult year and it is understood that the State Department is constantly looking for solutions and promotions, which will not only bring us closer to last year's goals this year, but next year, to be able to we prevent some situations in order to facilitate the situation as much as possible ", he added.

There were, he continued, promotions to the German market, "we are closely monitoring the situation with this year's bookings and at any time we are ready, depending on what we see, to do other last minute promotions to other markets".

At the same time, he pointed out that a reduction in the tourism product was expected after continuous records, while noting that the factors that affect us are exogenous, as he said, "Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia have found a way to attract traditional markets to which we have become accustomed in the past ”.

"This is the reason why, as a State Department, we are working hard to open new markets, attract new forms of tourism and new ages, to expand both our product and our risk as a country," he added.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism noted that Cyprus may be "slightly higher in terms of tariffs compared to other destinations, but no one complains that we are an expensive destination." The tourist, he said, gets what he pays in Cyprus and underlined that "the basis of everything is authentic hospitality and that is exactly what the customer gets".

In addition, he said that it is fortunate that, as Cyprus, we have achieved so much in tourism without yet taking advantage of "fantastic areas such as the mountains, Troodos or the area of Polis Chrysochous".

He expressed the view that, in the coming years, the country will benefit the most from the promotional actions of the Ministry to attract people to these areas and added "we recognize the contribution of the sun and the sea, in what we have achieved in recent years, the we keep this, but at the same time we want to develop the other regions in order to develop and enrich the product of our country ".

"We must be strong, continue to offer the services provided and not make the mistake of discounting on quality because this year or next year we need some discounts on prices," said Savvas Perdios, adding that the State Department is optimistic about the future. and looks forward to the cooperation of all actors "to go even further".
