Negotiations for an open end to the Cyprus issue have ended, Mustafa Akkinci reiterated, adding that the Turkish Cypriots are not going to be trapped once again in the dead zone and return to the same issue.

Speaking at the so-called "Near East" university, the Turkish Cypriot leader said he personally could not be part of such a process.
He said a new approach was needed, with a package in mind and a timetable, noting that the Turkish Cypriot side had sent the necessary messages to the UN secretary-general.
We will act, he added, depending on the proposal that will come from the general secretary. Mustafa Akinci said that everything that happens on the island should be on an agreed basis.
He reiterated that either the Greek Cypriots will accept to share some things, in a structure with two equal constituent states, or they will continue to have two separate entities living side by side.
He accused the Greek Cypriot side of not wanting to share power, arguing that the Turkish Cypriots had shown a constructive stance on all issues and that Turkey had also given the message that it would show the necessary flexibility.
On security, Mustafa Akinci said that keeping a reasonable number of a few hundred soldiers, which would at least psychologically reassure one side, would not pose a threat to the other.
