The Minister of Defense met with the Minister of Defense of Greece

The Ministers of Defense of Cyprus and Greece Mr. Christoforos Fokaidis and Mr. Panos Kammenos held a meeting today at the Ministry of Defense in Nicosia, during which issues of bilateral and European interest were discussed, as well as the initiatives they undertake jointly at regional level.

Among other things, they made a positive assessment of the developments regarding the operation of the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) as it has been formed, especially regarding the need to ensure unanimity for the participation of third countries in individual programs.

The adoption, in the first stage, of programs of special national interest for Cyprus and Greece, such as maritime surveillance, dealing with cyber threats, the creation of a network of business support nodes and crisis management, is also considered positive. Greece and Cyprus are coordinating in order to take advantage of opportunities created both at the political and operational level, in the context of the emerging new European defense union.

It was also decided to further strengthen the cooperation between Cyprus and Greece in terms of joint armaments programs, with the aim of taking advantage of opportunities offered for synergies and co-financing under PESCO. For this purpose, it has been decided to establish a Standing Technocratic Committee between the two Ministries.

Finally, after the absolutely successful organization of the tripartite meeting of the Ministers of Defense with Egypt yesterday, but also the tripartite meeting with Israel that preceded, it was decided, in consultation with third countries, to organize new trilateral meetings of Defense Ministers at regional level. with the aim of promoting a network of stability and security in the wider region.
