Today, the President of the Republic proceeded to sign the legislation passed in Parliament on the subject of sexual education.
Without denying the correctness of the opinion of the Attorney General, he nevertheless took into account:
The contractual obligations of the Republic of Cyprus as derived from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children from Sexual Abuse, which expressly provide for the state's obligation to provide information to children in framework of primary and secondary education on the risks of sexual abuse and exploitation.
That the legislation in question meets the above contractual obligations of the Republic, without interfering in any way with the substantive authority of the Minister of Education to plan, determine the curriculum and/or the timetable.
The President of the Republic also proceeded to sign the legislation to extend the moratorium on sales.
