"Yes" to the hunting of vine birds say the hunters of the province of Famagusta and 77% of hunters nationwide. The fruiting search for the hunting season that passed, was published yesterday by the Hunting and Fauna Service, recording in essence, what the vast majority of hunters themselves had found to a large extent. That is, hunting in Cyprus is in a long period of decline, at least in terms of endemic prey.

Both the hare and the partridge, despite the efforts made, do not seem to be able to recover substantially, remaining at constant levels of low yield, compared to 4-5 years ago.

Fragolina, the largest since 2006, has seen an increase in yields, which sends some optimistic messages. What should be noted is that in the general reduced yield of game, the fact that the yield of chewing gum was reduced this year also played a decisive role. However, the yield of the summer hunting season is positively assessed.

Specifically, the main conclusions of the research are as follows:
Compared to the previous year, the average hare harvest per hunter for 2015 compared to the corresponding last year was increased by 4,16%. The total hare harvest in 2015 was the same as last year. (The total yield of prey is directly related to the number of hunting licenses, which from 2010 onwards is declining, which is partly reflected in the total yield of prey).

Compared to the previous year, the average partridge harvest per hunter in 2015 was increased by 4,53% compared to the same period last year. The total partridge harvest in 2015 was increased by 1,19% compared to the same period last year.

It is noted that the percentage of fluctuation of the total yield of the prey may differ from the percentage of fluctuation of the yield per hunter, since the calculation of the total yield is done by reducing the average. per hunter in the number of renewed hunting licenses.

This implies that the same average yield may show a different total number of prey, because the number of renewed hunting licenses and the number of hunters hunting in specific hunting seasons vary from year to year. According to the research, in the hunting season of the epidemic hunt 2015, 96,33% of the hunters of the sample hunted, ie 40.616 hunters, with an average number of trips of 9,39, ie 0,16 trips less than the corresponding last year.

It is also added that:
Fragolina yield increased by 56,53% and is the second largest since 2006. Still yield increased by 40,63% and was the third largest since 2006.

The total yield of game decreased by 43,62% and this is mainly due to the significant reduction in the yield of chewing gum and cervix, species which over time show the highest yield. For the chewing gum, for the period under study, it is reported that it was the third worst since 2006. At this point it is pointed out that the actual yield is higher than that presented in the present study, since a percentage of prey is harvested by hunters. without having a renewed hunting license, which is not counted in the research.

The number of renewed hunting licenses (42.162) for the period under review was reduced by 0,13% and is the lowest number of renewed hunting licenses presented since hunting licenses are renewed electronically (2001). The first hunting licenses increased by 3,76% (883) and is the second lowest number since 2002.

The first excursion

According to the research, during the first hunting expedition, the hare harvest was 0,17 hares per hunter (increased by 21,43% compared to the same period last year), while for the partridges the yield ratio was estimated at 1,34, 12,60 partridges per hunter (increased by 22 compared to last year). The hare harvest of the first parting corresponds to 23% of the total hare harvest during the season, while the first harvest of the partridge corresponds to XNUMX% of the total partridge harvest during the hunting season.

In favor of hunting birds

In addition to the questions about the harvest, the hunters who participated in the telephone survey were also asked to answer questions related to the trapping, selective hunting and eating of the vultures.

To the question "what is your opinion about eating vines", 77% of hunters answered that their opinion is positive. It is noted that the opinion of hunters in the province of Famagusta is positive at a rate of 89,13%.

To the question "how do you deal with the idea of allowing the vulture to hunt with a flopper or airgun (selective hunting methods)", 78% of hunters answered that their opinion is positive.

To the question "what is your opinion about the illegal trapping of chickens", 68% of hunters answered that their opinion is negative. It is noted that the opinion of hunters in the province of Famagusta is positive for the trapping of vine birds, at a rate of 53,52%.

Finally, to the question "what is your view on illegal chewing gum?" 79% of hunters answered that their opinion is negative.
