In 2026, Cyprus takes over the Presidency of the European Union for the second time for a period of six months and will inevitably gather, not only the main decision-makers of the EU on its soil, but also a stream of political technocrats and personalities from all over the European Union. The importance of this juncture cannot be underestimated, as it offers a unique opportunity to upgrade our position on the European stage.

It becomes imperative to take advantage of the opportunity offered, which not only carries with it the official responsibilities that accompany the presidency, but also a dynamic for political, economic and social upgrading of the current state of affairs.

Resolution of the Cyprus issue:
The main priority during the Presidency of Cyprus in the EU must be the systematic effort to achieve a comprehensive solution to our contentious national issue. With continued efforts in cooperation with our partners, Cyprus can lead the way in promoting a new initiative for peace on our island, carefully drawing up a road map, which will build on the progress achieved in previous negotiations. In any case, the presidency will be a milestone through which Turkey should be pressured, which needs to receive a strong diplomatic message from today, that the presidency will be used for the Cyprus issue, in order to be forced to come to the negotiating table

It should be understood from the point of view of all member countries, that the resolution of the Cyprus issue is linked to incentives that create a unique diplomatic framework for the strengthening of European relations with neighboring countries of Cyprus, in the Middle East and North Africa. Cyprus can play a critical role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation in the region, a role sometimes claimed by Turkey in international politics, with a recent example being its mediation in reaching an agreement to transport Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea.

However, in order to prioritize and promote goals, it is important that the Deputy Ministry of European Affairs, which has been properly approved by the Government, be approved by the parliament as soon as possible, since it will design and develop policies, based on approaches that stem from the analysis of opportunities, but also adjustments to policies and alliances inside and outside the EU.

Promotion of Economic Development
In a period of international economic tightness, we must highlight a new, modern model for promoting economic development, especially in strategic areas such as tourism and connectivity. By preparing a coherent plan that listens to the demands of the tourism market, inoculated with modern means that look towards further development, the industry can work together by further highlighting the natural features that the island has, with the support of innovation and digital technology. Such a practice may even contribute to the creation of new jobs.

Tourism unfortunately does not currently receive the importance it should from the EU and we should make sure with our actions during the presidency that it is added to the EU's positive agenda.

The government must, in this light, take into account the importance of including the province of Famagusta in the planning for the hosting of various councils and initiatives that will be held during the presidency. The possibilities offered by the under-construction marinas of Protaras and Ayia Napa are enormous, as they have modern and functional infrastructures that can host conferences and ministerial councils that will be held during the six-month Presidency.

The monastery of Agia Napa and the chapel of Agia Thekla in Sotira, represent cultural and religious monuments that can well be used for actions that will promote our cultural heritage. Especially for the signing of relevant declarations, an initiative that each ministry will must prepare and promote.

In addition, the Liopetriou river, with its regeneration, can be an excellent place for similar actions to host efforts aimed at consolidating environmentally sustainable practices that the entire EU must adopt. At the same time, the cultural center of Famagusta in Deryneia is a valuable asset that should not be left behind, as it can highlight our presence, including the occupied city of Famagusta.

Education and Innovation
By promoting educational and research initiatives, Cyprus can encourage the exchange of ideas and knowledge within the EU, to create a policy framework for providing scholarships and conducting research, in collaboration with innovation centers, that will encourage common European practices in fields of science education and cyber security.

Within this whole network of actions, as a small state in the European family, we should not omit the need to indicate to our partners the application of the European solidarity principle, especially in the context of dealing with global challenges, such as the recent pandemic her COVID-19, migration and geopolitical conflicts.

As we embark on this journey, let us set ambitious goals and focus our collective efforts to ensure that our EU presidency in 2026 leaves an indelible mark on European history.

There are a little more than 2 years left until our country takes over the reins of Europe in January 2026 and this period is suitable for careful goal planning moves that will allow us to claim the best possible for our country during during the Cypriot presidency. It is also up to us to ensure that every corner of Cyprus enjoys the fruits of this period, promoting our interests and influence in the European Union. Cyprus can shine on the European stage in 2026, and it is our duty to make its light dazzling, above all European territory.
