Luxembourg, with 670 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants, was the country with the highest relative rate for 2017, according to a Eurostat news release, the EU's statistical office, while Cyprus is in fifth place with 609 cars.

Among the EU member states with the highest rates of passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants are Italy with 625 cars per 1000 inhabitants, Finland with 617 cars, Malta with 613 cars and Cyprus with 609 cars.

In 2017, the largest number of registered passenger cars was observed in Germany with 46 million cars, followed by Italy (37 million cars: 2016 data) and France (32 million cars).

During the five-year period from 2013 to 2017, there was a sharp increase in the number of passenger cars classified in many Member States.

The largest increase during this period was in Slovakia (18%), followed by the Czech Republic and Portugal (17%), Estonia (15%), Malta and Hungary (14%).
