The long-awaited, all-electric Volvo EX30 has officially premiered. This is the smallest SUV of the Swedish brand - in terms of size. It has a more friendly character, with an urban orientation and at the same time it is a more affordable solution compared to its brother XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge.

The EX30 it is the first premium SUV in the small segment and the fourth purely electric model for Volvo. According to information and the indicative price it has in the US ($34.950), where it is already available for order, it is expected to cost around 36.000 euros in Europe. A price which will be similar to that of models with an internal combustion engine, as Volvo emphasizes.

In terms of size, the new Volvo EX30 is 4,233 m long, 1,837 m wide and 1,555 m high. Its wheelbase reaches 2,650 m and promises spaciousness inside the EX30. Volvo emphasizes that the chassis of its small electric SUV has been set up to have a low center of gravity and near-ideal distribution between the axles, keeping the scale needle low for the class at 1.830 kg.

Outside…

In terms of design, it adopts elements from the larger Volvo EX90, but also the same name, which indicates the electric identity of the models of the Swedish brand. The closed-type grille is a characteristic of the models of this philosophy, while the lighting bodies with the well-known design approach "Thor's hammer" is also followed in the EX30.

However, you can't say that the EX30 is a copycat of the EX90, as it has its own strong personality. Its profile line, above the doors, follows an upward course and meets the large third pillars. The two-tone, black roof gives the feeling of a "floating roof", while the hood descends lower at the front and in combination with the muscular fenders, which house large wheels, give a dynamic image to Volvo's small SUV.

From the inside…

Minimal design dominates the interior of the new Volvo EX30. It is combined with state-of-the-art technology, as reflected in the large 12,3-inch screen that dominates the center of the dashboard. A sound bar runs the entire width of the front and is the first to be found in a car.

In practice, this improves the sound, but at the same time it also contributes to practicality, as speakers are not required, in places that were previously found in cars. The result is that there are more compartments, as for example in the doors. As for the multimedia system, it works with Google, Apple and Qualcomm, offering a unique experience.

The fastest Volvo

The new Volvo EX30 is available in three engine options, with two batteries. With one or two electric motors, for short or longer range or otherwise better performance, respectively. The entry-level version, with one motor, has a lithium battery, which limits costs, with a shorter range.

The upper version (Extended Range) with the one engine, which drives the rear wheels, produces 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm of torque, with the battery having a capacity of 64 kWh. The technology it uses is NMC (lithium, nickel magnesium and cobalt), which offers a range that exceeds 480 kilometers on a single charge.

The Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance has another engine, on the front axle, producing a total of 315 kW (428 hp) and 543 Nm of torque. So, with these data, this particular version of the EX30 is the fastest Volvo, as it accelerates from a standstill to the first 100 km/h in just 3,6 seconds.

Something that also makes the new Volvo EX30 fast is charging. The extended-range Twin Motor version provides charging with 153 kW, while the standard-range version has 134 kW. This means it can recover energy from 10% to 80% in less than 25 minutes an hour. The new, purely electric Volvo EX30 is expected on the Cypriot market around the end of 2023, with a price of around 37.000 euros.
