"There were rules of conduct but also 'dress code' to say inside, shorts or tears were not allowed…"
At On June 17, 1985, on Makariou Avenue in Ayia Napa, the legendary disco "VIPS" was inaugurated, which wrote its own story during the summer nights of Ayia Napa.
"Vips" was one of the biggest discos of the time, it had a capacity of 1500 people but still it was not big enough to accommodate the number of fans who wanted to have fun.
The first director of the discotheque, Kostakis Vouris, remembers that, "Every day the queue went parallel to Makariou Avenue and reached the Monastery."
From all corners of Cyprus and abroad, people gathered at "Vips" to have fun, especially on weekends where the inseparable took place.
One such night was June 17, 1987, when the legendary disco blew out two candles. As every year of this year, various dance competitions took place and the winner won a cup as a prize. Apart from the contestants, there were also some fans who won the impressions with their figures and became the masters of the track.
In an interview with "Vantage", Mr. Vouris conveyed the climate that prevailed in "Vips", but also in almost all the discos of the 80's in Cyprus.
"The world was different then. There were rules of conduct as well as dress codes to say inside, shorts or tears were not allowed. The DJ was Kim Nikolaou and the music he played was only foreign.
Music was also accompanied by laser shows. "Vips was open daily, from March to November, and there you could find well-known figures such as Charlies, Andreas Psilos and Michailas."
What characterized the 80s and the discos, was the costume. This is the generation of color and "kits". Wadding, satin and velvet jackets, colorful shirts, baggy pants or wide leggings, wide belts and leather shoes, were just some of the features of the 80s outfit.
The barber shop also changed that decade.
The boys had a "muddy" mane and fringes up to the nose and the girls were perianth, while the boys had timidly started to dye their hair with oxygen and the girls to make blonde highlights.
The "curtain" for the famous "Vips" fell in 1989, but managed to become known, not only on the island but also abroad.
