The Supreme Court, exercising its powers under Article 3 of the Courts Act of 1960, recently revoked an earlier decree dated September 13, 1974, by which the Courts of Famagusta and Larnaca had been unified, under the dramatic circumstances of the invasion and its results. This resulted in the majority of Famagusta district cases being heard in the Larnaca District Court.
With the new decree, the District Court of Famagusta will operate as a separate Court and will be housed until the return to Famagusta in a newly built building in the Municipality of Paralimni. At this initial stage, five judges have been appointed, including an administrative President of the Court.
At the new Famagusta Court, all civil and criminal cases will be heard for the time being, except for the Criminal Court, which will be heard in Larnaca for the time being. The prospect of transferring special jurisdiction cases (Family Court, Rent Control Court, Labor Disputes Court, Military Court) from the Larnaca Court will also be examined, depending on the needs.
