A total of 19 coastal points throughout Cyprus have the marking of the blue flag. The Blue Flag Program is essentially an education and information campaign.
The involvement of local government is the key to the success of the campaign and participation implies sharing responsibility for the marine environment.
The Blue Flag is awarded annually to beaches that comply with a range of criteria including bathing water quality, environmental education and information as well as the safety and proper management of beaches.
The Free area of Famagusta is the area with the most blue flags.
The province of Famagusta holds a total of 23 Blue Flags out of a total of 63 awarded throughout free Cyprus.
The Municipality of Paralimni has 9 beaches, the Municipality of Ayia Napa has 13, while for the beach of Agia Thekla which is located on the Sotiras-Ayia Napa border, the Blue Flag is always awarded to the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
