Commenting on the announcement of the European Commission, the President of REACTION and Vice President of the Pan-European Youth Forum for Road Safety, Marios Stavrou said that it is tragic while the majority of countries have a decrease we in Cyprus have an increase compared to 2014 which is approaching 27%.
In Cyprus, according to the President of REACTION, there is a general decrease from 2010 that reaches 5%, however in 2015 we had this large increase. Greece recorded the most spectacular reduction in the last six years in deadly conflicts with a reduction of more than 36%.
The deadliest traffic accidents in Cyprus in 2015 had risen to 56 to 57 dead. The province of Nicosia had the most dead (17) while the worst month was by far July. Wednesday and in the time frame between 12:00 - 19:59 most deadly traffic accidents seem to have occurred.
Of the 57 dead in 2015, 19 were drivers, 16 were pedestrians, followed by the category of motorcyclists with 12 dead. More than 50% of the motorcyclists and passengers / drivers who lost their lives did not wear helmets and seat belts respectively. Extremely difficult year for the Cypriot highways where we had 6 deadly traffic collisions with 6 dead.
