The first step was taken yesterday in the parliamentary Committee on Education with the proposal of a law of DISY, caused by the decision of the Parliament for reference to the union referendum, to be placed at the top of the agenda of the Committee.

As the chairman of the Committee, DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, confirmed to "F", the proposal will be on the agenda of the next session next Wednesday.

The discussion will begin, without setting a strict timetable for completing the exchange of views. He clarified that there is no question of retroactive effect of the proposal in case it is approved. The proposal of the Alarm provides for the transfer to the Minister of Education of the powers for the determination of the school celebrations.

The inclusion of the proposal in the agenda of the Committee was not discussed during yesterday's session as it is considered an acquired right of the chairman of the Committee, although AKEL stressed that a number of issues are pending that need to be discussed directly in the Education Committee.

AKEL wants information to support the DISY bill in an "excess" aimed at minimizing Mustafa Akinci's argument at the negotiating table and the leadership to be behind a series of initiatives that have either been taken or are in progress towards the Turkish Cypriot side.

This move, according to information, will be made despite the strong objections of the Left party in the transfer of power to the Minister of Education, but also the issue of trust that it raises for the Minister Costas Kadis himself.

It is emphasized that a text with the DISY law proposal has not been distributed to the members of the Education Committee, while many clarifications are expected from the rapporteurs.

However, party sources pointed out that AKEL is determined to do whatever is necessary in order for the two leaders to return to the negotiating table.

The parties that voted in favor of the union referendum do not intend to vote in favor of the bill as they see it as a retreat to the demands of Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
