Bangkok: Thai veterinarians have removed nearly 1.000 coins from the stomach of a sea turtle, which had a bad habit of swallowing coins thrown by tourists into its lake to bring them good luck.
The 915 coins, as well as other items that "Omsin" had swallowed, as the turtle is called, (meaning "piggy bank" in Thai) weighed 5 kilos. Due to the weight, the unfortunate animal found it difficult to swim.
The sea turtle lives in a wildlife protection center in Sriraka, east of the Thai capital Bangkok. Veterinarians who operated on the animal pointed out that this 7-hour operation was the first of its kind in the world.
