The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a criminal investigation into the leak of thousands of CIA documents. U.S. officials have told the country's media that the CIA is working with the FBI on a joint operation to investigate the case.

On Tuesday, WikiLeaks released thousands of secret CIA documents that indicate that the US Secret Service uses methods and tools to intercept conversations via smartphones or "smart" TVs.

According to a report by the British news network BBC, both the CIA and the FBI and the White House have refused to comment on the authenticity of the leaked documents.

A CIA spokesman told the BBC on Wednesday that "the American people should be deeply concerned about any WikiLeaks revelations designed to undermine the agency's ability to defend America against terrorists and other adversaries." He went on to say that "such revelations not only endanger US personnel and companies, but also equip our adversaries with tools and information designed to harm us."

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told US media that the criminal investigation would look into how the documents were seized by Wikieaks. In addition, the investigation will try to determine whether the breach of CIA systems was a work from within the service, officials added.

The CIA has not yet confirmed whether the documents - which cover the three years 2013-2016 - are authentic.
