Overnight, the island's firefighting forces battled the flames, with the result that the first light of day showed a clearly improved image of the fire front that is burning a wooded area in northwestern Chios from the area of Katavasis and towards Pitios.
In order to understand the difficulty of firefighters' intervention, it is enough to note that the ground firefighting forces have installed a network up to 1,5 kilometers from the fire engines in wooded areas with vertical, in many cases, rocky terrain.
There are 90 firefighters working at the scene with six teams of walking departments, (including 10 firefighters who traveled by boat from Lesbos and 27 firefighters who traveled by air from Athens), 18 vehicles, five aircraft and four helicopters, one of which is for their coordination. Assistance in the extinguishing by volunteer firefighters and water carriers of the local government is important.
The fire broke out at the intersection of Katavasis - Dieuchen when a car that hit the slopes of the road caught fire. The driver is detained with a prosecutor's order and today he is going to appear at the Chios District Court.
It is recalled that today, Monday July 31, the prefectures of Chios, Samos and Lesvos are at a very high level of risk (category 4) for fire occurrence, according to the map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
